Wolves have signed Nantes centre-back Bastien Meupiyou (18), both clubs have announced. Wolves’ outlay for the signing of the France youth international rises to €5m without performance-related add-ons taken into account. The Ligue 1 outfit also reportedly secured a sell-on clause. Meupiyou has put pen to paper over a five-year contract with the Molineux outfit.
Meupiyou was sent off for his professional debut with Les Canaris last season at home against Marseille and spent the better part of the previous campaign on the sidelines after recovering from a meniscus injury. The Nantes academy graduate featured during preseason but he was not part of Antoine Kombouaré’s side that drew 1-1 away at Toulouse for Ligue 1’s season-opener. Meupiyou was expected to part ways with his formative club as he was entering his final contract year.
“He’s very physical, very strong, very quick“, Wolves Sporting director Matt Hobbs said. “But also, he’s played lot at six, a lot at left-back as well. It’s not often you can find a big, physical profile that comes with the ability to play on the ball and to play in all those positions. He fits what we think a Premier League player looks like.“
