Lens centre-back Kevin Danso (25) won’t play his side’s final Ligue 1 matchday against Montpellier this Sunday. According to a report this Saturday from L’Equipe, Austria national team boss Ralf Rangnick has put “maximum pressure” on Danso not to play against Michel Der Zakarian’s team, going as far as threatening his spot for the upcoming Euros with the Austria national team. Danso is absent from the squad called up by Lens head coach Franck Haise. “Physically fit to play, Kevin Danso has decided not to take part“, Lens officially confirmed through their X account.
According to L’Equipe, Danso received a call from Rangnick. The former Manchester United manager reportedly threatened the centre-back, stating that he would not be called up for the upcoming Euros should he play against Montpellier. Austria have qualified for the Germany-hosted tournament. They will play against France, Poland and The Netherlands. Rangnick has reported doubts about Danso’s fitness after missing out on last week’s draw against Rennes due to a hamstring strain.
The outlet report that Danso opened up to Haise about the matter and told the Lens manager he could not jeopardize his spot for the Euros, considering Real Madrid centre-back David Alaba (31) is set to miss out on the tournament. Unsurprisingly, with Lens’ European qualification not yet sealed, Haise did not appreciate Danso’s defection at all, as did other of his Lens teammates. Danso might have already played his final game with the Artois side. L’Equipe add that Premier League clubs are set to trigger the Austrian’s release clause this summer.
