‘I feel at home here’ – Andrey Santos celebrates Strasbourg return with a goal

Andrey Santos’ (20) stint on loan at RC Strasbourg Alsace last season was short but sweet. Having joined on loan from partner club Chelsea, his participation in youth competition for Brazil meant that he only made his debut for Les Alsaciens in late February. However, when he did play, he made a big impression; RCSA impressed him too.

The Brazilian brought a level of control to Strasbourg’s midfield which had been sorely lacking. His contribution was consequential in allowing RCSA to finish the season in relative tranquility, staving off relegation for another year. It was a mutually beneficial loan and one which allowed Santos, who warmed the bench at Nottingham Forest before making the move to the Meinau, to earn crucial minutes, aiding his progression and getting on the right path.

It is perhaps logical therefore that interest from so-called “larger” clubs was shunned, in favour of a return to Strasbourg. Having missed the first match of the season last weekend, he was immediately brought back into the fold by new manager Liam Rosenior and his impact was immediate as he scored in a 3-1 win over Stade Rennais.

In a post-match mixed zone interview, Santos spoke about his return to Strasbourg. “I wanted to come back here because the atmosphere is different. I feel at home,” said the midfielder, who will once again look to be pivotal in a Strasbourg team that hopes to look up the table rather than over their shoulder this season.
