As Ligue 1 football returns following the international break, AS Monaco sit top of the table, two points clear of second-placed Paris Saint-Germain, last season’s champions.
Monaco are currently unbeaten and have won all but one of their Ligue 1 matches this season. They have carried that form into the UEFA Champions League too, with a win over Barcelona and a draw against Dynamo Zagreb.
After the win over Barcelona, Maghnes Akliouche announced Les Monégasques’ ambition for the season. “Our objective is to put Monaco back in its place. That is the clear objective. Monaco should be playing in the Champions League every season,” began Akliouche, before unveiling the Principality club’s Ligue 1 objectives. “[In the league], we are targeting the title, and we want to enjoy the Champions League.”
Speaking to France 3, Takumi Minamino (29), the most experienced member of Monaco’s side, echoed the sentiment expressed by the France U21 international. “I clearly have the image in my mind of Monaco as champion [of Ligue 1]. It is a level of expectation,” said Japan international Minamino.
Speaking to Get French Football News last month, ahead of the centenary game against Montpellier HSC, the Principality club’s CEO, Thiago Scuro, said that it was “too early” for title talk.
