Rennes right-back Lorenz Assignon (24) has signed a contract extension with his formative club, the Ligue 1 side has announced. Assignon had been a key target for several clubs this summer, including AS Roma, Everton and Ligue 1 rivals Marseille, on the back of his six-month loan to Burnley at the start of the year. The Clarets’ relegation back to the EFL Championship put paid to their chances of making Assignon’s move permanent.
In signing a contract extension, Assignon is now tied to Stade Rennais over a long-term contract set to expire in 2028. “I am growing with the club”, the fullback said. “There is a new project, new players, I am very happy to be part of it. I came back stronger and more ambitious after six months in the Premier League, I learned a lot. The goal is to return to Europe as quickly as possible.”
With Assignon expected to leave this summer, Rennes dipped into the transfer market for a right-back, eventually signing Hans Hateboer from Europa League winners Atalanta BC. Rennes will host Montpellier this Sunday.
