Everton and Marseille target Lorenz Assignon to stay at Rennes

According to a report by Benjamin Quarez, Lorenz Assignon will not be leaving Stade Rennais before the end of the transfer window this summer.

The Frenchman, under Bruno Genesio, was a guaranteed starter for Rennes at the start of last season, however, he was frozen out by midseason appointment Julien Stéphan before a brief but successful loan spell at Burnley.

Burnley’s relegation back to the EFL Championship put paid to their chances of making Assignon’s move permanent. However, whilst the defender returned to his parent club Rennes, he wasn’t expected to stay there. He was one of many players touted for a departure, however, with just hours before the closure of the transfer window, that move has not come to pass.

The Rennes fullback had been a key target for a number of clubs this summer. Most recently Everton FC and Olympique de Marseille had been looking at the defender with both interested in securing his services on a loan deal with an option to make the move permanent.

However, Assignon will remain at Rennes for the foreseeable future where he has re-earned his place back in the starting line-up.
