Stade Rennais winger Mathis Lambourde (18) has been handed a two-year suspended prison sentence for involuntary manslaughter, according to reports from L’Equipe and Ouest-France. The 18-year-old was trialed this Friday following his involvement in the tragic death of a 51-year-old woman in Rennes on June 18. Lambourde was riding an e-scooter in the city center when he fatally collided with a pedestrian on a non-road section. Lambourde was riding with a passenger on the e-scooter, which is illegal. The pedestrian succumbed to her injuries six days after the incident.
The 18-year-old professional Stade Rennais football player was prosecuted and referred to a court for the counts of involuntary manslaughter, deliberate and clear violation of an obligation of safety or caution and defect of insurance. Lambourde, considered to be one of Stade Rennais’ most promising player, admitted his carelessness and expressed his sincere apologies to the victim’s family in court.
The court president handed Lambourde a two-year suspended prison sentence, in line with the public prosecutor’s demands. A second trial will be held in October 2025 to determine the compensation.
