Olympique Lyonnais have not given up on signing Jordan Veretout (31) from arch-rivals Olympique de Marseille, according to a report by RMC Sport. Discussions are reportedly in progress between the two clubs and the veteran midfielder is thought to be open to the move.
The transfer window ‘slammed’ shut last night across the major European leagues but in France, there is a special rule that allows for two teams within the country to make one additional transfer between French clubs. This is referred to as a ‘joker’ transfer. Lyon would have to use their ‘joker’ to sign Veretout from Marseille.
Veretout had been a key part of the Marseille squad since he joined the club from AS Roma in 2022. However, with a new manager, Roberto De Zerbi, and a new project at the club, the France international has been ostracised and placed in the “loft.” The midfielder was asked to find a new club this summer but was unable to secure a move away from Marseille.
