Rennes midfielder Lovro Majer agrees to join Wolfsburg

Foot Mercato report that Rennes’ Croatian attacking midfielder Lovro Majer has agreed terms over a move to Bundesliga club Wolfsburg.

Since joining from Dinamo Zagreb two summers ago for €12m, Majer’s midfield vision and grace have delighted many Ligue 1 observers and drew transfer attention from Atlético Madrid last off-season. The Madrid side were rebuffed, however, as Majer was considered an important part of Bruno Genesio’s squad.

But, a year on, the situation has changed for the 25-year-old. Often sacrificed for the sake of balance in a stacked SFRC first team, Majer has struggled for consistency in 2023, meaning the Breton club is now open to selling him.

Rennes had hoped to recoup €30m for the player, seen by many as Luka Modrić’s successor for the national side, but could now accept a €25m bid, with Wolfsburg currently offering around €20m plus bonuses as talks continue. Rennes sporting director Florian Maurice confirmed an offer had arrived to the press earlier this week.

The outlet points out that there is still a long way to go before the deal is sorted, but Majer has already come to a personal agreement with the German club having spoken with coach Niko Kovač.
