Ibrahim Sissoko (27) has joined Ligue 2 side AS Saint-Etienne, the club has announced this Thursday. Sissoko was a free agent following the termination of his contract with FC Sochaux-Montbéliard. The latter club have been dealt an administrative relegation into the third-tier National 1 by the DNCG – French football’s financial watchdog – due to their serious financial struggles. The Doubs side have been forced to release or sell their most prized assets, including Skelly Alvero to Lyon, in a last-gasp bid to salvage their Ligue 2 status.

Saint-Etienne have benefited from their rivals’ woes by acquiring Sissoko on a free transfer. The Franco-Malian forward logged 13 goals in 35 Ligue 2 games with Sochaux. The 27-year-old has put pen to paper on a three-year deal with Les Verts, keeping him at the Forez club until 2026. Sissoko is poised to replace Jean-Philippe Krasso (25), who signed for Serbian champions Red Star Belgrade last month. ” I’m very happy to join Saint-Étienne, a land of football, a great club with vibrant fans”, Sissoko said. “I want to do great things here and achieve our goals.” Sissoko will wear the #9 jersey with Les Verts.
