According to Foot Mercato, Sunderland have entered the race for Ligue 2’s top scorer Alexandre Mendy (30). After four prolific years at SM Caen, it has become recently clear that the forward will be leaving the club with Mendy not travelling with the side to Switzerland to take part in their preseason training camp.
Al-Riyadh had been active in attempting to convince Caen to part with their striker with the Saudi Arabian club having submitted at least two bids for a player with two years left on his contract. However, now the French outlet have revealed Sunderland have begun negotiations with Caen having reportedly submitted a bid for the veteran striker.
It is perhaps another sign that Sunderland are keenly monitoring the French market. The Championship side have been heavily linked during their managerial searches in December 2023 and June 2024 with candidates from the French league, such as Will Still and to a lesser extent Julien Sablé. In June, their search for a replacement for Michael Beale eventually concluded with the appointment of FC Lorient’s Régis Le Bris.
