Pierre Sage hopes victory over Rangers will define Lyon’s season

Olympique Lyonnais’ flawless start to their Europa League campaign continued with a 4-1 victory over Rangers away at the Ibrox Stadium. It has been a stark contrast to their domestic fortunes with Lyon securing only their second victory in Ligue 1 last weekend courtesy of a last-minute winner from Malick Fofana (19) against Toulouse FC.

Fofana was once again on the scoresheet during the trip to Glasgow. The Belgian winger opened the scoring in the 10th minute before registering a brace in the second half when he scored Lyon’s fourth of the evening completing the rout of the Scottish side.

In his postmatch comments, Pierre Sage was hopeful that Lyon could look to build on this result, although he was keen to point out that previous performances had not been awful. “[Our games] before were not so bad,” the manager stated, “I hope that after [this match] we will be even better. Indeed, this could be a match that leaves its mark on our group. Today, our only concern is to win our home match against Nantes in Ligue 1, we need to take points and move up the rankings.”

Lyon host Nantes on Sunday afternoon. Their visitors are in mixed form despite their position in the table (7th) having thrown away winning positions against the two teams at the bottom of the table, Angers SCO (1-1) and AS Saint-Étienne (2-2), by conceding penalties.
