The French FA – the Fédération Française de Football – will refer to FIFA the matter of the Argentina players singing a racist chant mocking the origins of Les Bleus, according to a report this Tuesday by the AFP. On the back of Argentina winning the 2024 Copa America final against Colombia, footage of Lionel Scaloni’s players celebrating their latest title have emerged on social media. On Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez’s Instagram live, Argentina players can be heard singing a derogatory chant regarding the origins of France players.
The song originated from Argentina supporters and was heard for the first time during the 2022 World Cup, in which the Albiceleste famously won the final on penalties against France. The racially-motivated lyrics roughly translates to “They play for France, but they are from Angola. His mother is Nigerian, his father is Cameroonian. But on the passport: French.”
AFP reports, citing a source within the French FA, that the FFF have referred the matter to FIFA. It remains to be seen whether the international governing body of football will acknowledge the request of the French FA.
