Andy Carroll’s (35) decision to leave Ligue 2 side SC Amiens in order to join National 2 side FC Girondins de Bordeaux certainly raised a few eyebrows.
The former England international joined Amiens from Reading the previous summer. However, despite having featured prominently in Ligue 2 last season, he made the choice to go down into the fourth tier to join Bordeaux, who recently went bankrupt, were forced to revoke their professional status, and as a result were kicked out of Ligue 2, despite securing safety last season.
‘In my career, it’s never been a question of money’ – Carroll
Carroll made a spectacular debut, netting a late brace as Bordeaux salvaged a 2-2 draw at home to Voltigeurs de Chateaubriant. Speaking for the first time since joining Les Girondins, the former Liverpool and Newcastle United spoke about getting Bordeaux back to where they “deserve to be.” That comment comes after new manager Bruno Irles announced a surprising ambition to lead the club back into European football.
The Englishman, who is reportedly earning around €3,500 per month, then told RMC Sport that he is actually losing money to play for Bordeaux. “To be honest, it’s even costing me money to come and play for Bordeaux but I’m playing football and I am simply happy to be playing football. I want to be a part of this club’s history and to be frank, it wasn’t a question of money. In my career, it’s never been a question of money,” said Carroll.
