Lille OSC midfielder Angel Gomes (23) has received his first call-up to the England national team. He is one of three uncapped players to be selected in Lee Carsley’s first squad.
England have two UEFA Nations League matches coming up in early September, against Ireland and Finland. Gareth Southgate left his position as manager of the Three Lions in the wake of the Euros final defeat to Spain with Carsley taking charge on an interim basis.
There are some surprise names in his first squad, including Chelsea’s Noni Madueke and Newcastle United’s Tino Livramento. Gomes’ selection is also a surprise. The Manchester United academy product has rebuilt his career in Northern France, featuring regularly and performing consistently, often in a deeper No.8 role, although he still infrequently features in the No.10 role.
Gomes has also been a regular pick for the England U21s and his selection for the senior side is a reward for his form at this level, as well as his consistency for LOSC last season. He hasn’t featured since suffering a severe concussion on the opening day of the Ligue 1 season, against Stade de Reims. Tests were reassuring and Gomes is expected to make his return soon.
