Lille will face Fenerbahçe in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The Turkish Süper Lig side have eliminated Switzerland outfit Lugano FC, winning the two-legged tie 6-4 on aggregate. Les Dogues could only qualify for the third round after finishing the Ligue 1 season in fourth place. Lille were notably leapfrogged by Brest during the campaign’s final matchday after drawing at home against Nice. Eric Roy’s Pirates, AS Monaco and PSG are already qualified for the revamped 8-game Champions League group stage.
Bruno Genesio’s Lille will face José Mourinho’s Fenerbahçe twice in the next two weeks with a berth in the playoff rounds up for grabs. The first leg won’t be played at Lille’s Stade Pierre-Mauroy as it will still be used for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. The ground will host the knockout stages of the handball tournament. Les Dogues will have to settle for Valenciennes’ Stade du Hainaut.
